Thomas Murphy was well known in Derby, and his family home was at 49, Jackson Street. He joined the Sherwood Foresters fourteen years previously as a bugler, and was a member of the Sherwood Foresters football team, being captain for several years, including the 1911 – 1912 season in which the team won the Army Cup. He held over 30 medals for football, and was awarded a championship medal for running. He was also a 'very clever cricketer'. He died at the Cambridge Hospital, Aldershot, of a bullet wound to the head and bayonet wounds received in action during the battle of the Aisne on the 20th October, 1914.
